Year 3 Autumn Term Overview

October 2025

As part of our celebrations for the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, our school community came together to create a vibrant and meaningful collaborative mural, inspired by the messages of Laudato Si’. Using a wide range of art resources and techniques, all pupils from year 3 contributed to the design and creation of this beautiful piece, which now proudly adorns one of our school walls.

The mural captures key themes from Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’, including care for our common home, gratitude for creation, and our shared responsibility to protect the Earth. Children expressed these values through imagery of nature, wildlife, water, and people working together in harmony with the environment. The collaborative nature of the project itself mirrored the message of unity and stewardship that St. Francis so passionately embodied.

We then wrote our own class pledge which all children signed, agreeing to follow the promises to care for all of God's creations.

Throughout the creative process, pupils were deeply engaged and excited to share their ideas. From painting and drawing to using recycled materials in imaginative ways, the mural became a joyful expression of faith, care, and creativity. Staff also noted how the project helped deepen students’ understanding of both St. Francis’ legacy and the ongoing importance of environmental action.

We are incredibly proud of the mural and all those who contributed. It stands not only as a beautiful artwork, but also as a reminder of the call to live simply, love generously, and protect the world around us.

 History - The Romans - July 2025

This term, Year 3 learned about the Romans and how they invaded Britain. We learned about Roman soldiers who were strong and trained to protect the empire. They wore special armour and helmets.

Louella said: “I found it interesting that it took them so many times to invade Britain!”

One famous person we studied was Boudicca, the queen of the Iceni tribe who led her people in battle against the Romans. Although she lost, her courage inspired others.

Emma said: “I was surprised to find out that Boudicca was a real person. She was very brave.”

We had a very interesting visit to Colchester Castle where we were able to try building a roundhouse and a villa and discover how the Romans changed Britain.

Peytance said: “I really enjoyed finding out how the Romans ruled and how they invaded countries. At Colchester Castle, we saw spears that Romans used in battle. It was really interesting.”

Lily added: “I liked it when we went to Colchester Castle, saw the Roman walls and found out how they built their houses.”

To finish our topic off, we made Roman shields and learnt how to make the formations the Romans used in battle.

Noah said: “It was interesting when we learnt about the formations they made. They were called the tortoise, the circle and the square.”

Max added: “I liked it when we made Roman shields because it was really fun and I liked marching in the playground.”

D.T. - Juggling Balls - May 2025

As part of our DT unit we have been designing and then making juggling balls. We explored different patterns and styles.

We used tie die to decorate the material and then added decorations with fabric pens. We have then been bust sewing the material to create our own juggling balls. We will be displaying them on open evening so we would love for you to come and see our hard work.

History - Mummified Tomatoes! - March 2025

We each had a tomato and we worked together.  We covered the tomato in salt and bicarbonate soda. It was really fun and really messy!

When the mummification was finished we had to leave it in a pot for 40 days and the container had to be air tight.

Last week, got to look at them. The tomato we had left, without putting salt on it, had rotted and was mouldy but the mummified ones still looked like tomatoes and they were yellow where we had cut them!

Science - Our Trip to Hyde Hall - March 2025

We went to Hyde Hall on a sunny day. I had a thrilling day and I went to a visiting area for schools. We learnt lots about plants. (Clarke H)

At Hyde Hall we made our own plant pots and planted some seeds. (Maria)

I had an extraordinary day at Hyde Hall. We went on a plant hunt and Lily in my class found a white flower like a lily that she kept. We learnt that lots of things are made from plants such as cotton and the best thing we learnt was about tropical fruits. (Sophia)
