Festive Science!
Over the past few weeks, children across the school have been taking part in a series of exciting festive science challenges, giving them the opportunity to explore, investigate and develop their scientific thinking through hands-on learning.
One challenge focused on discovering which materials would keep Santa’s presents dry. Children tested a variety of materials, observing which absorbed water and which were waterproof. In the Star Challenge, children created stars using different materials and placed them onto water to see which star opened first, learning how materials react differently when wet.
To help Santa stay quiet on Christmas Eve, children also investigated which materials were most effective at muffling the sound of Santa’s footsteps, listening carefully and comparing results. Another investigation explored which materials would stop a snowman from melting, helping children understand insulation and temperature.
Throughout these investigations, children made predictions, observed changes, compared materials and shared their ideas with others. These festive challenges encouraged curiosity, teamwork and problem-solving, while making science fun and engaging. The children thoroughly enjoyed becoming festive scientists and discovering how different materials behave in real-life situations.
