Playleader Workshop - April 2025
On Wednesday 30th April, children from Year 4 and Year 5 took part in an exciting Playleader Training session. The day was designed to help pupils develop the key skills needed to become effective play leaders, such as communication, participation, and cooperation.
As part of their training, the children designed vibrant posters to promote positive play and explored a variety of short, simple games that could be introduced during break times. Working in teams, they created new games aimed at keeping all children active during lunchtime, aligning with the Chief Medical Officer’s guidance that all children should be active for at least 60 minutes a day – including 30 minutes within the school day.
After developing their games, the young play leaders trialed them on the playground, reflecting on ways to improve and adapt them. They then delivered these games to a different group of peers, finishing the day by leading their activities with Year 2 pupils.
Throughout the training, the children showed exemplary behaviour. Their enthusiasm, focus, teamwork, and resilience were outstanding, and they supported each other brilliantly when faced with challenges.
The skills developed during the day will now be put into practice during lunchtimes. These young leaders will help promote structured play, support midday staff, and encourage teamwork and physical activity — all of which contribute positively to children’s mental health and well-being.
Here are some thoughts of the Year 2 children:

'My favourite was dodgeball because I liked dodging the balls and cathing them' - Rocco
