Talking Trash!

Let’s Talk Trash – Learning About Our Environment

This half term, the children have been exploring the importance of reducing,
reusing, and recycling, with a particular focus on the impact of littering. They
have developed a deeper understanding of the dangers facing our environment
and why it is vital for their generation to not only learn about climate change
but also to take action to make a difference.

A highlight was attending the Let’s Talk Trash Festival at Braxted Park, where
pupils listened to inspiring talks from notable speakers and engaged in
thoughtful discussions with both adults and their peers. The event provided an
invaluable opportunity for the children to reflect on the changes they can make
and the positive impact they can have on the future of our planet.

We arrived at 9:15 registered our school and waited for all the other pupils to arrive. Whilst we waited, we decided to play a game of ultimate tag.

Next we went to the pavilion for a welcome speech where we met Luke Douglas Hume aka the coastline runner who tried himself on running the coastline of the UK collecting litter from the beaches. He showed us all the rubbish he had collected that morning on his run to Braxted Park estate, he told us the most common rubbish he collects is butts, bottles, balloons and sweet wrappers. We also met a man called Ed Lennox from CleanUp Britain who talked to us about littering. (Lottie)

For our first fun, fascinating activity of the day we had a debate. We had to decide if we should pick up litter or stop people littering. I personally thought we should stop people littering because if you pick litter up, others will still add to it creating a never-ending cycle. (Elsie)

An activity with with a group called drama geezers who told us a story about saving the planets. The story was about a boy called Alex building a rocket and blasting off around the world to resolve problems caused on the planet by: deforestation, littering, driving not walking and not recycling our waste. (Freddie)

Finally, we took part in an arts and crafts challenge. We decorated giant letters to demonstrate what we would like the ocean to look like and what the ocean actually looks like due to the impact of littering and pollution. (Devon)

The children behaved impeccably, showing what excellent role models they are when representing our school. (Mrs Draycott)
