The Life of Francis of Assisi

Francis of Assisi (c.1181–1226) was an Italian Catholic friar, preacher, and founder of the Order of Friars Minor (the Franciscans). Known for his radical commitment to poverty, humility, and love for all creation, he became one of the most beloved saints in Christian history.

Early Life

Francis was born in Assisi around 1181 or 1182. His father, Pietro di Bernardone, was a wealthy cloth merchant. Because of his family’s wealth, Francis grew up enjoying a comfortable and carefree life.

As a young man, he loved music, parties, and fine clothing. He also dreamed of becoming a knight and gaining honor in battle.

Conversion and Call to Poverty

Francis’ life changed dramatically after experiencing illness and the hardships of war. While praying in the small church of San Damiano, he believed Christ spoke to him from a crucifix, telling him:

“Francis, rebuild my Church.”

At first, he literally began repairing ruined churches. Soon he realized that his mission was to renew the spiritual life of the Church. Francis publicly renounced his wealth and inheritance and chose a life of poverty and service to God.

Founder of the Franciscans

Francis began preaching repentance, simplicity, and care for the poor. Many followers joined him, forming the Order of Friars Minor.

The order emphasized:

  • Poverty

  • Humility

  • Service to others

  • Preaching the Gospel

Their rule was approved by Pope Innocent III around 1209.

Love for Creation

Francis became famous for his love of nature and animals. He believed that all creatures were part of God’s creation.

Stories about him include preaching to birds and taming the Wolf of Gubbio. His spirituality celebrated the natural world as a reflection of God’s goodness.

One of his most famous writings is the Canticle of the Sun, a hymn praising God through “Brother Sun,” “Sister Moon,” and the whole of creation.

Later Life

In 1224, while praying on Mount La Verna, Francis received the stigmata, wounds similar to those of Christ on the cross. This made him the first recorded saint to receive these marks.

Despite illness, he continued preaching peace, humility, and devotion to God.

Death and Legacy

Francis died on October 3, 1226, in Assisi.

He was canonized only two years later by Pope Gregory IX in 1228.

Today, he is remembered as:

  • The patron saint of animals and ecology

  • The founder of the Franciscan Order

  • A symbol of humility, peace, and care for creation

His life continues to inspire people around the world to live simply and serve others.
