Preferential Option for the Poor

Meet our mascot for Preferential Option for the Poor, Poppy the Popokotea, who reminds us to put people most in need first. Below are some of the ways we uphold this principle at St Francis.

We teach children that following Jesus means noticing those who need help most and choosing to put them first. Our school community regularly supports local foodbanks, CAFOD appeals, and parish outreach projects, helping pupils understand that small acts of generosity can make a big difference to families facing hardship.

 Children learn to recognise unfairness and respond with compassion. Through RE, PSHE, and global learning, pupils explore stories of poverty and injustice, reflecting on how their choices can help create a fairer world. They write prayers for those who are struggling, learn about communities affected by conflict or climate change, and consider how their actions can bring hope.

 Across the year, pupils take part in charity events, collections, and fundraising activities that remind them to think beyond themselves. Whether donating during Harvest, supporting Advent and Lenten appeals, or raising money for CAFOD, children learn that caring for the poor is a central part of living out the Gospel.

In daily school life, pupils show this principle by looking out for classmates who may feel lonely, worried, or in need of support. Through kindness, empathy, and practical help, they learn that putting others first is a powerful way to share God’s love.
